On three summer evenings in August, the limestone plateau above Trieste will once again serve as a backdrop for cinema under the stars. Cinema sotto le stelle in Carso, organized by the Trieste-based association La Cappella Underground, will transform the festival grounds in front of Sgonico’s town hall into an open-air movie theater. The free screenings will take place on August 19, 21 and 23, beginning at 9 p.m.
The program highlights films connected to Friuli Venezia Giulia, from shorts set in the Triestine Karst to features by emerging Italian directors. A food truck will be on site from 7 p.m., offering visitors the chance to enjoy an aperitivo or informal dinner before the screenings.
The series will open on Tuesday, August 19, with L’uccello imbroglione (“The Tricky Bird”), a 13-minute short by Davide Salucci filmed in the local Karst landscape. It will be followed by Gloria! (2023), the directorial debut of singer Margherita Vicario. Set in an 18th-century Venetian convent, the film tells the story of Teresa, a young woman with a radical musical vision, who joins forces with a group of fellow musicians to invent a sound both rebellious and modern.
On Thursday, August 21, the focus will shift to family audiences with Robot Dreams (2023), an animated feature by Pablo Berger, co-produced in Spain and France. The dialogue-free film, which explores friendship and loss, was celebrated at Cannes, awarded at Annecy and nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
The final evening, Saturday, August 23, will begin with Transumanza (2025), a short by Giovanni Bertoia, and continue with Emilia Mazzacurati’s Billy (2023). The feature follows the life of a former child prodigy podcaster who, now adrift in adulthood, strikes up an unlikely friendship with a reclusive rocker in his small provincial town.
The initiative is supported by the Regional Council of Friuli Venezia Giulia and the Municipality of Sgonico.
