The regional government of Friuli Venezia Giulia is reinforcing its commitment to green hydrogen as a future energy source, announcing a new €4.7 million research grant program set to open on September 1 and close on September 26.

The initiative follows more than €11 million already invested in new scientific infrastructure under development in Trieste and Udine. These facilities, involving the University of Trieste, the University of Udine, the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA), Area Science Park, Elettra Sincrotrone, the National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics (OGS), and the National Research Council (CNR), will serve as hubs for projects funded under the new call.

According to Alessia Rosolen, the regional councillor for education and research, the program aims to “consolidate strategic investments and create the conditions to attract and retain top-level talent.” The long-term goal, she said, is to position Friuli Venezia Giulia as a recognized European center for hydrogen innovation, linking local research to businesses and international scientific institutions.

Funding will cover the entire renewable hydrogen value chain, from production to storage and transport technologies, as well as fuel cells and intelligent systems for integrated infrastructure management. Eligible applicants include organizations already involved in the ongoing infrastructure projects.

More than 20 highly qualified researchers are expected to participate in projects lasting up to 48 months. Applications must be submitted exclusively through the region’s “Istanze Online” platform.
