Trieste is preparing to host one of its most eccentric and beloved summer traditions this Saturday, July 26: the 18th edition of the Olimpiade dele Clanfe, a dive competition that blends humor, athleticism, and community spirit.
Organized by the Associazione di Promozione Sociale SPIZ, the event has drawn 171 registered participants this year, including an impressive 73 minors—an all-time high.
“We want to thank everyone who signed up, on behalf of the members and volunteers of SPIZ,” organizers said in a statement. “A special thanks goes to the 73 underage divers. We’re not sure whether to interpret this as a hopeful sign for the future—or a worrying display of youthful recklessness,” they added with characteristic irony.
The Clanfe competition celebrates the joy of diving with a twist—literally. Participants, affectionately known as clanfadori, range in age from 3 to 86, and compete with dives that are often named, costumed, and theatrically performed. Spectators can expect an afternoon of laughs, splashes, and surprises.
“This kind of turnout is incredibly rewarding,” said the organizers. “It repays us for the huge amount of voluntary work that goes into making this event happen year after year.”
This year’s edition also brings a few new surprises, with organizers hinting at changes to the format aimed at keeping the event fresh while staying true to its roots.
The Olimpiade dele Clanfe has grown over the years from a playful local contest into a cherished celebration of summer fun, with a uniquely Triestine flavor—equal parts comedy, chaos, and community.
The 18th Olimpiade dele Clanfe will take place tomorrow, Saturday, July 26, 2025, at the historic Stabilimento Balneare “Ausonia” on Riva Traiana 1 in Trieste. The event officially starts at 1:00 PM (13:00 CEST), with the competition kicking off at 2:00 PM.
