A new roundabout near Via Flavia, adjacent to the historic Illy coffee plant, has been officially named in honor of Ernesto Illy, marking the 100th anniversary of the birth of the celebrated entrepreneur and chemist.
Ernesto Illy, credited as a driving force behind the global success of the Trieste-based coffee company that bears his family name, played a pivotal role in shaping the brand into a symbol of Italian coffee excellence.
The newly named “Rotonda Ernesto Illy” sits at the intersection of Via Flavia, Via Francesco Carletti, Via Giovanni e Sebastiano Caboto, and Strada della Rosandra. The dedication ceremony took place on Friday, July 18, and was attended by local officials, including Trieste’s City Councillor for General Services, Sandra Savino; Director of the Department of Innovation and Citizen Services, Lorenzo Bandelli; and the Chief of Local Police, Walter Milocchi.
The event featured the unveiling of a commemorative plaque, underscoring Illy’s lasting impact on both the local community and the international coffee industry.
Ernesto Illy, who passed away in 2008, was known not only for his entrepreneurial leadership but also for his dedication to scientific research and innovation in coffee production. His legacy continues through the company and its commitment to quality, sustainability, and education.
