This summer, Italy’s high-speed and long-distance trains are going to the dogs—and cats.

Trenitalia, the country’s main train operator, has announced that pets can travel free of charge with their owners aboard Frecce and Intercity trains from June 21 through September 15, 2025. The initiative is part of a national push to combat the troubling trend of pet abandonment during the vacation season.

“We want to help families keep their four-legged companions by their side as they travel,” Trenitalia said in a statement. The campaign aims to remove logistical and financial barriers for pet owners, many of whom face dilemmas when planning summer trips.

To take advantage of the offer, travelers bringing dogs must carry the animal’s registration certificate and health booklet—or a pet passport for those coming from abroad. Dogs must be leashed and wear a muzzle at all times during the journey.

Booking a pet’s free seat is simple: on Trenitalia’s website or app, travelers can select the “Viaggia con il tuo cane” (Travel with your dog) option before completing payment. Cats and small dogs housed in a carrier no larger than 70 x 30 x 50 centimeters can also ride for free, as can guide dogs for the blind, who are always allowed on board at no charge.

The move comes as part of a broader animal welfare effort in Italy. Just this month, Rome’s Fiumicino Airport opened a new luxury dog hotel, offering boarding and spa services for pampered pets awaiting international departures.

More information on Trenitalia’s pet travel policies can be found on the company’s official website. For those traveling with pets aboard Italo trains, details are available on the Italo website.
