The Municipality of Trieste has announced the continuation of elevated ozone levels through Friday, July 4, following forecasts from ARPA-FVG, the regional environmental protection agency. The city remains under an “attention threshold” for ground-level ozone, defined as concentrations exceeding 120 micrograms per cubic meter.

The alert, issued under point 4 of Trieste’s Municipal Action Plan approved in 2013, is part of ongoing efforts to mitigate the health impacts of high atmospheric ozone, which typically intensifies during periods of stable and warm weather. Current meteorological conditions are expected to maintain ozone levels above the recommended threshold for several more days.

Authorities are urging residents — particularly children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions — to follow recommended precautions aimed at reducing exposure. These include limiting outdoor physical activity during peak sunlight hours and keeping indoor environments ventilated during cooler parts of the day.

Guidelines are based on health recommendations provided by the local healthcare agency, Azienda Sanitaria n.1 Triestina. The advisory emphasizes that while ozone is not directly emitted but formed through complex reactions involving sunlight and pollutants, its effects can significantly impact vulnerable groups.

City officials will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
