The regional government of Friuli Venezia Giulia has approved a new measure expanding tourism-related funding opportunities beyond mountain municipalities to include areas with cultural significance, major cities, and UNESCO-recognized locations.

Regional Councillor for Tourism Sergio Emidio Bini announced the decision following the passage of a resolution identifying priority areas for investment in multi-year tourism development strategies.

“With the selection of locations covered by this initiative, the Region is setting a clear direction for long-term tourism growth, highlighting the unique potential of our territory,” Bini said.

Among the areas of focus are the Alpine region, which continues to see increased interest from tourists; the city of Pordenone, recently named Italy’s Capital of Culture for 2027; and Udine, which is set to host the UEFA Super Cup, reinforcing its status as a hub for international sporting events.

The plan also emphasizes the long-term impact of the European Capital of Culture designation shared by Gorizia and Nova Gorica in 2025. The Collio area, known for its wine production and outdoor tourism, has seen growing recognition, including a national award for cycling tourism won by the FVG3 Pedemontana cycle route.

Trieste remains a key driver of tourism for the region, thanks in part to a surge in cruise ship traffic. The city was recently named one of Booking.com’s top 10 trending global destinations for 2025.

The funding program is part of a broader strategy by the regional government to support tourism infrastructure and promote the area’s diverse attractions—from cultural heritage and urban experiences to sports and nature.

The resolution was approved by the regional executive committee earlier this week.
