In Lignano Sabbiadoro, a New Model for “Smart” Local Tourism Takes Shape

A new beachside infopoint in the seaside town of Lignano Sabbiadoro is being hailed by regional officials as a practical example of what they call “smart proximity tourism,” an approach designed to enhance the visitor experience while promoting sustainable travel and local discovery.

The structure, operated by PromoTurismoFVG, opened on June 21 along the Lignano seafront between beach offices 6 and 7. It is open daily through September, with morning and afternoon hours. Visitors can stop by for information, maps, travel suggestions, locally themed merchandise, and experiential offerings—all just steps from their sun loungers.

“Being present for tourists—even under the beach umbrella—means making every moment of their stay an opportunity to showcase the beauty and variety of Friuli Venezia Giulia,” said Sergio Emidio Bini, Regional Councillor for Tourism and Productive Activities, during a visit to the new facility on Wednesday. “This beach infopoint is a concrete example of smart tourism that blends hospitality, promotion, and exploration of the territory.”

The infopoint’s location, near a bicycle rental station, is also intended to promote so-called “slow” and sustainable mobility. According to Bini, it encourages not only the exploration of Lignano Sabbiadoro itself but also serves as a gateway to the wider region, nudging tourists to go beyond the beach and discover inland destinations, cultural experiences, and lesser-known attractions.

The initiative is part of a broader regional strategy to redefine tourism not only in terms of numbers but in terms of quality, offering tailored services where visitors are—sometimes literally—already relaxing.
