Work is scheduled to commence today, Friday, February 7, to rehabilitate the aging water pipeline beneath the Sandrinelli Tunnel, a crucial passage linking Piazza Sansovino and Piazza Goldoni. The project, overseen by the regional utility company AcegasApsAmga, forms part of a broader initiative funded by Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) aimed at modernizing the city’s infrastructure.

The rehabilitation process will utilize a technique known as “relining,” in which a new pipe is inserted within the existing one, minimizing the need for extensive excavation. This approach follows detailed surveys conducted in January that mapped the precise layout of the pipeline.

Phased Construction and Traffic Disruptions

The project will unfold in two distinct phases, each with specific traffic restrictions:

Phase 1: February 7–28
From 8:30 a.m. on Friday, February 7, until midnight on Friday, February 28, the Sandrinelli Tunnel will be closed to vehicular traffic. The closure will extend to key surrounding streets, including:

  • Piazza Sansovino (between Via Madonnina and the Sandrinelli Tunnel)
  • Via Silvio Pellico (between Corso Italia/Piazza Goldoni and the Sandrinelli Tunnel)

Public transportation will be permitted to pass through the tunnel under a single-lane alternating traffic system, ensuring continued service for commuters.

Phase 2: March 1–16
The second phase will focus on hydraulic adjustments at the intersection of Piazza Sansovino, Via Madonnina, and Via Bernini. While lane reductions will be implemented in Piazza Sansovino, full road closures are not anticipated at this stage.

A Commitment to Infrastructure Modernization

The project is part of ongoing efforts to enhance Trieste’s water distribution system and improve service reliability. Officials urge residents and commuters to plan accordingly to mitigate the impact of disruptions.

AcegasApsAmga has expressed its apologies for any inconvenience caused and assured the public that the work will be carried out as efficiently as possible.
