A former parking lot in the city center continues to be used by drivers despite the expiration of its operating concession, raising concerns about enforcement and public space management.

The gravel lot in Largo Santos, previously managed by Confcommercio, officially ceased operations on January 31 when its concession expired. However, dozens of vehicles continue to park there daily, including on Monday, February 3.

“The deadline to freely park was January 31. This morning, Confcommercio has put its own operator on-site to discourage those who are still parking there,” said Michele Babuder, Trieste’s Councilor for Territorial Policies. “The company will take care of removing the barriers and the screed used as a ramp in the coming days, with appropriate signage. Anyone who does not remove their car may face fines or even removal.”

Confcommercio has confirmed that it is working to clear the area, while city officials have reiterated that responsibility for enforcement lies with the company, as outlined in a municipal resolution passed in December.

The situation underscores broader challenges in regulating parking in Trieste, particularly in high-traffic areas where demand for parking remains high.
