In a ceremony held at the Sant’Anna Municipal Cemetery on Monday, officials unveiled the restoration of three important historical monuments, marking a significant step in Trieste’s ongoing efforts to preserve its cultural heritage. The restored sites include the monument to the Italian Raiders, as well as the graves of Carlo Sbisà and Adolfo Leghissa.

The event was attended by City Councillor Alberto Polacco, who represented the Assessor for General Services Policies Sandra Savino, along with representatives from the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts, and Landscape of Friuli Venezia Giulia, AcegasApsAmga, and Edilmaster, the Trieste-based building school that led the restoration efforts.

Polacco emphasized the significance of the restoration, stating, “This is the latest milestone in a project that began in 2022, aimed at restoring monuments that are not only historically important but culturally meaningful to our community.”

The restoration was part of a collaboration between Edilmaster and the municipality, with students from the school gaining hands-on experience in art conservation. The initiative follows a similar project in 2023, which restored the monumental tombs of the Guardia di Finanza.

The monument to the Italian Raiders honors young soldiers who died clearing minefields in war zones. The graves of Sbisà, an artist, and Leghissa, an important historical figure, also received much-needed restoration, including the cleaning of biodeteriorating patinas and the restoration of bronze inscriptions.

This project, carried out at no cost to the municipal government, reflects Trieste’s commitment to preserving its historical landmarks and offering students in the field of construction and restoration valuable real-world experience.
