Amid the glitz and glamour of the Cannes Film Festival, we had the opportunity to sit down with Nicoletta Romeo, the esteemed director of the Trieste Film Festival. In an insightful conversation, Romeo underscored the significance of Cannes as a premier platform for global cinema.
“Cannes is not just a festival; it’s a confluence of the world’s most creative minds,” she remarked. “For festivals like Trieste, it serves as an invaluable source of inspiration and networking.”
Romeo elaborated on how Cannes influences programming choices and collaborations at Trieste. “The exposure to diverse narratives and cinematic techniques here helps us curate a more enriching lineup back home. It’s about broadening horizons and setting higher standards.”This year, Cannes also sees the participation of several film industry representatives from Friuli Venezia Giulia, Romeo’s home region. “It’s heartening to see our regional talent being recognized on such a prestigious stage,” she said. “Their presence here not only highlights the burgeoning film culture in Friuli Venezia Giulia but also paves the way for potential international collaborations. For example, Trieste’s director Laura Samani’s film project was chosen by the jury as one of their favorites. It’s truly special.”As the conversation drew to a close, Romeo emphasized the collaborative spirit fostered by Cannes. “This festival is a beacon for cultural exchange, and we at Trieste are proud to be part of this global dialogue.”
