Perdòn de Barbana, the main religious tradition of Grado, is celebrated this Sunday, July 2. It is an annual procession which usually happens on the first Sunday of July.
Since 1237 the community of Grado ventures out on boats decorated with flags to the Barbana Island. A symbolic act to renew the ancient vow to Virgin Mary who is believed to have saved the town from plague. Originally, at least one family member had to attend the procession.
Perdòn starts in the early morning, which is preceded by the Sabo grando, a day of contemplation and reflection. After the ceremony in Basilica di Sant’Eufemia, the statue of the Virgin is carried to the harbor where it is placed on the flagship.
The procession of boats leaves the lagoon and reaches the small island that hosts the Sanctuary of Barbana.
