by In Trieste
In a brief chat on a crisp winter morning the mayor of Trieste talked about meeting his young wife, starting to work at the age of 15 and the future of our city.
Roberto Dipiazza: You know, I started working as a delivery guy when I was 15. I remember older ladies would tip me for helping carry their bags. I never stopped working after that. I am 67 years old now and have been in politics for the past 20 years. I truly believe that work is essential to life.
So true.
I mean, I have been working nonstop but 8 years ago I met my wife, who is 20 years my junior, and she was and is a game changer. For the first time in my life I felt insecure when I asked her to marry me – I thought she might’ve said no as I am a lot older than she is. But she said yes and I have been happy ever since.
What’s in store for Trieste in 2021?
I truly believe that Trieste is ready to restart even before other cities like Rome and Florence, which are more connected to tourism. We will be receiving 380 million from the recovery fund to invest in our city. As you can imagine, it’s quite a sum for a place like Trieste.
Indeed.
Then we have a lot of foreign investments. A Hungarian company has bought the former Stock factory. The former ironworks will become the place for port logistics. Not to mention the Old Port with its 65 acres by the sea. Then there’s the redevelopment of Roiano’s piazza which cost about 10 million. The hay is in the barn – Trieste is ready to restart.
Fantastic!
Many countries have invested in our city and that is a grand opportunity for us. I foresee the increase of population as during the rule of Maria Theresa. A lot of foreigners will be moving to our city and Trieste will become even more multicultural.
