Trieste is a well-known hub for scientific excellence and research: ICGEB, Elettra Synchrotron and SiSSA to name a few research centers located out here. Needless to say, it was no surprise when Trieste was elected the European city of science in 2020 and was invited to host ESOF in July, 5-9th. But of course we have forgotten about all that as our lives have been turned upside down with the outbreak of the infamous virus. However, just a couple of days ago researchers from ICGEB gave us a ray of hope by stating that they have succeeded in isolating and sequencing the virus circulating in the region. They were able to achieve complete sequencing of genomes, which will enable them to study the evolution of the coronavirus during the pandemic and to trace the origin of the viruses that have been introduced in Friuli Venezia Giulia. Why is this good news for us besides endless pride for our local research institute? The ICGEB research team might eventually be able to discover the long-awaited vaccine that will cure thousands of people. In the world full of noise these days, this is some great news to receive.
