Health authorities in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region have voiced their concerns over a lack of social distancing after photographs showed Trieste’s main squares and beaches crowded with people this past weekend.

The scenes of people packed closely together – while wearing masks – prompted FVG’s regional health commissioner to comment on the “disconcerting” images.

Meanwhile, local media reports that Friuli Venezia Giulia risks entering the “red zone” if contagion numbers continue to rise.

The crowds in Trieste may prompt police to close off certain “movida spots”, according to Il Piccolo, after the city recently shut down some of the areas most associated with nightlife, on weekend nights, in response to the covid-19 crisis.
