Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is scheduled to visit the northeastern town of Gemona del Friuli on Wednesday, where she will attend an extraordinary session of the Regional Council marking the 50th anniversary of the 1976 earthquake.

According to the official government agenda, the session will begin at 5 p.m. Meloni’s presence, anticipated for several days, was confirmed only recently. President Sergio Mattarella is also expected to attend, alongside Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Luca Ciriani.

The commemoration will include a flyover by Italy’s aerobatic team, the Frecce Tricolori, during the afternoon proceedings. The team, based in nearby Rivolto, is expected to perform as a tribute to the victims of the earthquake and to the resilience of the Friulian people in the aftermath of the disaster.

Ciriani said the flyover was intended to honor both the lives lost and the recovery that followed. He also noted the involvement of the Prime Minister’s office and the Defense Ministry in facilitating the initiative.

The 1976 earthquake, which struck the Friuli region, remains one of the most devastating natural disasters in modern Italian history, leaving lasting marks on the region and shaping its reconstruction efforts in the decades since.
