Italy on Tuesday observes the Giornata dell’Unità Nazionale, della Costituzione, dell’Inno e della Bandiera, commemorating the birth of the modern Italian state, the Constitution, national anthem, and tricolor flag. The date marks March 17, 1861, when Victor Emmanuel II became the first king of a unified Italy, though full unification continued over decades.
In Trieste, the municipal building will be lit in flag colors tonight. Interviews with locals reveal that while many do not actively celebrate, they consider the day an important symbol of national identity.
