Travelers in Italy are expected to face widespread disruptions on Friday, June 20, as a nationwide general strike is set to impact air, rail, and local public transportation services across the country.

The 24-hour strike, which involves both public and private sector workers, is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. on Thursday, June 19, and continue through 9 p.m. the following day. It is expected to cause delays and cancellations across multiple modes of transport.

Rail Travel

Italy’s national railway service, Trenitalia, has warned passengers to anticipate service reductions affecting both long-distance high-speed Frecce and Intercity trains, as well as regional routes. While the company is required by law to maintain a minimum level of service during strikes, essential connections will only be guaranteed during peak travel times: from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

More detailed information on train schedules and service availability is available on Trenitalia’s website.

Air Travel

Airports across Italy are also expected to see disruptions due to the strike, which includes walkouts by baggage handlers, ground staff, and employees of external service providers. While the extent of the impact will vary, travelers are advised to confirm their flight status directly with their airline.

Italy’s flag carrier, ITA Airways, announced the cancellation of 34 domestic and international flights on Friday, including services connecting London, Rome, and Milan. Under Italian law, certain flight operations are protected during key time windows — from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. — when minimum service levels must be upheld. The country’s civil aviation authority, ENAC, provides ongoing updates on scheduled strikes and guaranteed flight times.

Local Transit

Commuters in cities including Trieste should also expect delays and reduced service on local bus, tram, and subway lines. The strike’s impact will vary by city and operator. Essential transport services across Friuli Venezia Giulia are expected to run from the beginning of service until 8:30 a.m. and again from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

As the country prepares for another day of coordinated industrial action, travelers are encouraged to plan ahead, monitor official transport channels, and consider alternative arrangements where possible.
