In a striking prelude to Pordenone’s year as Italy’s Capital of Culture in 2027, the small town of Sacile unveiled a bold architectural and cultural statement: a concert arena shaped like a grand piano.

The event, held Thursday evening, featured a performance by the internationally acclaimed Carles & Sofia Piano Duo, inaugurating Arena Musicae—a sculptural open-air venue made entirely of local wood, designed to resemble a piano and tuned for acoustical perfection.

“This opening concert, rich in emotion, positions Sacile as one of the cultural epicenters of Pordenone’s Capital of Culture celebrations,” said Cristina Amirante, regional councilor for Infrastructure and Territory, who attended the event on behalf of the Friuli Venezia Giulia administration.

The concert is the first act of Armoniosi Loci (Harmonious Places), an ambitious artistic project that aims to highlight the region’s cultural excellence. The name itself, Amirante noted, reflects the spirit of the initiative: blending music, architecture, and local craftsmanship into a resonant celebration of place.

“I followed the development of this project closely,” Amirante said. “Tonight, we see a captivating and practical idea come to life—an elegant marriage of cultural creativity and entrepreneurial mastery from the piano-making tradition of Pordenone.”

Sacile, often referred to as “The City of Piano,” is home to a vibrant network of musical institutions and renowned piano manufacturers. The new arena, constructed with indigenous timber from Friuli Venezia Giulia, underscores both the town’s musical heritage and the region’s excellence in woodworking.

“The shape of the piano highlights the significance of this instrument to Sacile,” Amirante said, noting that the arena’s design provides an ideal acoustic chamber, promising an immersive experience for both performers and audience.

The Arena Musicae project is part of a broader strategy to elevate the cultural and artistic identity of Pordenone province in the run-up to 2027. With events like Armoniosi Loci, the region is signaling its readiness to take center stage—not only in Italy, but on the international cultural map.
