Overlooking the shimmering Adriatic Sea, the Chamber Music Association of Trieste, a bastion of classical music in northeastern Italy, is preparing a celebratory 2025 season to honor its 30th anniversary. With 15 performances scheduled from January to November, the season will center on the theme Cromatismi 4.0: Do You Like Brahms?, showcasing the works of the great German Romantic composer alongside a lineup of other musical masters.

Since its founding by musicologist Fedra Florit in 1995, the association has emerged as a cultural landmark in this historic city, hosting concerts that draw international attention. It is best known for the Premio Trio di Trieste, a prestigious chamber music competition that has launched the careers of countless musicians and ensembles.

“This milestone is as much about the music as it is about the vibrant community that has supported us for three decades,” Florit said in an interview. “Through Cromatismi, we aim to explore the timelessness of chamber music, starting with Brahms, whose emotional depth and complexity resonate profoundly.”

From Berlin to the Balkans: A Global Season

The season will open on January 29, 2025, with a performance by the Philharmonische Camerata Berlin, a distinguished ensemble drawn from the ranks of the Berlin Philharmonic. They will present Brahms’ lush String Sextets Op. 18 and Op. 36, setting the tone for a year of musical brilliance.

Throughout the season, audiences can expect performances from acclaimed artists and ensembles, including pianist Roberto Prosseda, the Quartetto Guadagnini, and violinist Pavel Berman. The Škampa Quartet from the Czech Republic and Slovenia’s Quintetto Slowind will also take the stage, adding a regional flair by featuring composers like Dvořák and Shostakovich.

The association’s commitment to innovation and discovery is evident in its programming. A highlight will be a May concert by Berman and pianist Maria Meerovitch, who will reinterpret the passacaglia, a dance form originating in the Iberian Peninsula.

Spotlighting New Talent

In addition to celebrating established artists, the association remains devoted to nurturing young talent. A spring performance by the Euphoria Quartet, winners of the 2024 Premio Trio di Trieste, promises to introduce fresh voices to Trieste’s discerning audience.

The season’s grand finale will feature three past Premio winners performing together, a nod to the association’s lasting impact on the global chamber music scene.

A Community Institution

For three decades, the Chamber Music Association has been a pillar of cultural life in Trieste, supported by partnerships with Italy’s Ministry of Culture and the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region. Its intimate venue, Teatro Miela, provides the ideal setting for chamber music’s intricate and emotive performances.

As Trieste continues to position itself as a hub of European culture, the Chamber Music Association stands as a reminder of the power of music to transcend borders and time. For the audience, this anniversary season offers not just a celebration of Brahms but also a reflection on 30 years of artistic legacy in the heart of the city.
