With the arrival of spring, the Orto Botanico di Trieste is reopening to the public on April 3, inviting visitors to explore its collections at a time when seasonal blooms begin to transform the landscape.

Set on the hillside overlooking the city, the botanical garden offers a setting that appeals to a wide audience, from casual visitors to students and plant enthusiasts. Its reopening marks the start of a new season centered on biodiversity, environmental awareness and the changing rhythms of plant life.

Organizers describe the experience as both educational and immersive, with opportunities to observe a wide variety of species and learn about their ecological roles. The garden’s pathways, which wind through themed sections and historic plant collections, are expected to showcase early spring flowering and renewed greenery.

This year’s program includes a series of guided walks, thematic visits and workshops designed for different age groups. Activities will range from structured educational experiences for schools to interactive events aimed at families and individual visitors.

The first weekend will feature two introductory events. A morning guided walk titled “Benvenuta Primavera” will focus on the garden’s history, its plant collections and how the site has evolved over time. In the afternoon, a family-oriented activity, “La Natura a colori,” will combine observation and play, encouraging participants to identify early signs of seasonal change.

Special programming tied to the Easter holiday will also mark the beginning of what organizers describe as a broader spring calendar, with additional events expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

The garden will be open from Friday through Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., as well as on public holidays and special occasions. School groups can also arrange visits through dedicated educational programs that introduce younger audiences to plant science, biodiversity and environmental stewardship.

As temperatures rise and the city moves further into spring, the reopening of the botanical garden offers a chance to engage with nature at a moment of visible transition — when dormant landscapes give way to color, growth and renewed activity.
