The medieval castle overlooking this small Adriatic town is entering a new phase, as local officials welcome its new owner and outline plans to open the historic site more fully to the public.

In recent days, Mayor Paolo Polidori formally received Federica Alessio at City Hall, marking her acquisition of the Castle of Muggia. Alessio, a native of nearby Trieste who now lives in the United States, brings with her both an international perspective and a longstanding personal connection to the town and its landmark.
In conversations with the mayor, Alessio described her intention to transform the castle into a more accessible cultural space. Her plans include opening the property for guided visits, hosting events throughout the year and expanding its role as a hub for artistic and educational initiatives. In recent months, she has launched a broader cultural project through Culture Arti e Saperi Srl, in collaboration with the Alessio Ge Foundation.
Mayor Polidori expressed confidence in the transition, emphasizing Alessio’s personal commitment to the site. He noted that she has already begun work to care for and enhance the property, and described her as a fitting successor to the Bossi family, who managed the castle for many years.
The first opportunity for the public to see the new direction will come during the upcoming “Castelli Aperti” weekend in Friuli Venezia Giulia, on March 27, when the Castle of Muggia will open its doors alongside other historic residences across the region. Alessio herself is expected to guide visitors through the site.
Further details about access and programming are expected to be released in the coming days, as the castle prepares to reintroduce itself to the public under new stewardship.
