Trieste remains among the top ten Italian cities for climate, according to the latest ranking by Il Sole 24 Ore. The survey, which analyzes weather conditions across Italy’s 107 provincial capitals, uses 15 indicators based on a decade of data collected by 3BMeteo.
Compared with the previous year, Trieste slipped slightly, moving from seventh to eighth place, but it continues to rank highest in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region and among the leading cities nationwide. Its favorable position is largely attributed to strong air circulation, driven by the bora winds and proximity to the sea. Trieste ranks first for summer breezes, and while intense bora gusts can have a negative impact in the analysis, the wind helps reduce air stagnation and moderate perceived temperatures during heat waves.
In contrast, the region’s inland cities face more challenging conditions. Udine and Pordenone are affected by higher summer temperatures, greater humidity, and more frequent periods of stagnant air. Udine, however, improved significantly, climbing eleven positions from 70th to 59th. Pordenone remained largely unchanged, dropping slightly from 76th to 77th, confirming its status as the regional capital with the least favorable climate.
Gorizia saw the most notable improvement in the region, rising 19 places from 64th to 45th. The gain is primarily linked to increased ventilation and a relatively lower number of tropical nights.
The survey also reflects a broader trend across northern Italy: heat waves, intense rainfall, and extreme weather events have become more frequent in recent years. Overall, the regional climate remains intermediate in a national context, similar to that of the nearby Po Valley. While inland cities face higher heat, humidity, and stagnant air, coastal areas continue to benefit from maritime influences and consistent winds.
