In an effort to modernize its traffic infrastructure, the Municipality of Trieste announced that it will begin upgrading the city’s traffic light control systems from Tuesday, March 3, through Friday, March 6, 2026.

The work is part of a public-private partnership agreement with Edison Next and will involve the replacement of all traffic signal controllers across the city with next-generation technology. In total, 69 signal regulators are slated for substitution.

City officials said the technological overhaul is designed to improve the efficiency and reliability of Trieste’s traffic management network. During the installation period, however, the coordinated traffic signal system commonly referred to as the “green wave” — which allows vehicles traveling at a consistent speed to encounter consecutive green lights along major thoroughfares — will be temporarily deactivated on the affected routes.

The synchronized system will be restored on each corridor as soon as work is completed, the city said.

To mitigate disruptions, the local police will be stationed at key intersections to direct traffic and ensure circulation through impacted areas.

A detailed list of the intersections scheduled for upgrades between March 3 and March 6 is expected to be released by municipal authorities.
