On Jan. 27, Italy’s Holocaust Remembrance Day, the University of Trieste will hold the 12th edition of Convivere con Auschwitz, a multidisciplinary conference examining the legacy of the Shoah and its relevance today. The event will take place at 5 p.m. at Teatro Miela and will also be live-streamed.

This year’s conference, subtitled “and human barbarism,” explores how Auschwitz serves not only as a historical reference but also as a lens for recognizing contemporary forms of dehumanization, including hate speech, prejudice and violence against civilians.

Among the featured guests is Terumi Tanaka, a 2024 Nobel Peace Prize laureate and a representative of Nihon Hidankyo, the organization of survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, whose participation links different 20th-century traumas through the shared importance of testimony.

The program combines academic analysis with cultural expression, including a theatrical monologue on Giorgio Perlasca and a contribution by animator Bruno Bozzetto. The conference is free and open to the public.
