Interviews: Elisa Lodi, Roberto Benes – Dirigente scolastico dell’Istituto Comprensivo Roiano, Gretta, Hack
Renovation work on the gymnasium at the Pietro Addobbati Middle School in the Gretta neighborhood has been completed, officials announced on Monday. The gym, dedicated to Professor Norberto Tonon, now features a newly installed wooden floor designed to enhance safety and performance for students and local sports clubs.
The project was presented at a press conference attended by Elisa Lodi, Trieste’s municipal councillor for Real Estate and Sports, and Roberto Benes, head of the Roiano-Gretta Comprehensive Institute. City officials, contractors, and representatives from local basketball associations, including A.S.D. Barcolana Basket Trieste and A.D. Pallacanestro Saba Trieste, were also present.
“Completing this renovation was a commitment we made to both the school and the sports associations,” Ms. Lodi said. She noted that the work was carried out during the holiday break, allowing the floor to be replaced without interrupting school or athletic activities.
The previous PVC flooring had developed minor lifts and worn areas over time, which posed a tripping hazard. In addition, PVC provides limited shock absorption, potentially contributing to joint stress and tendon injuries in high-impact sports. In response, city officials opted for a full replacement using a new wooden surface.
To minimize disruption, technicians employed a low-profile interlocking system with an elastic mat and plywood base, which allowed for rapid installation without removing the existing floor. The project cost approximately €48,000, including safety measures, and was carried out by the firm Cerbone Giovanni e Figlio Srl.
Ms. Lodi noted that this renovation follows other recent improvements to the facility. “A few years ago, we spent €70,000 refurbishing the locker room showers,” she said. “Next steps include repainting the gym walls and removing wallpaper. Our goal is to make school gyms safer and more accessible for children.”
Mr. Benes praised the timing and quality of the work. “The renovation was completed quickly and efficiently, with minimal disruption to school activities,” he said. “It is part of an ongoing effort to improve our facilities for students and the community.”
