Enrollment for Italy’s public primary, middle and high schools have opened this Tuesday, 13 January at 8 a.m., beginning a four-week period in which families must choose where their children will study in the next academic year. Applications must be submitted online by 8 p.m. on Feb. 14 through the Ministry of Education’s Unica platform.
The process applies to students entering the first year of primary school, lower secondary school and upper secondary school. Families must log in at unica.istruzione.gov.it using a digital identity system — SPID, electronic identity card (CIE), national services card (CNS) or the European eIDAS system.
The application requires basic information about the student and family, along with the selection of a first-choice school. Families may also indicate second and third choices, which will be considered only if the first school has no available places. The form can be saved and completed in multiple sessions before final submission.
The Education Ministry has made available an online user guide and a technical help desk to assist families during the enrollment period.
As the registration window opens, schools across the city are holding their final round of open days, giving students and parents a chance to visit campuses, see classrooms and laboratories, and learn more about academic programs. These events come just days before families must finalize their choices.
Upper secondary schools, in particular, are placing strong emphasis on outreach, as enrollment numbers influence staffing, funding and long-term planning. After weeks of presentations and student-focused activities, schools are now in the final stage of recruitment before applications close in mid-February.
For many families, the combination of online registration and last-minute school visits marks a decisive moment in planning their children’s education for the coming year.
