Snow fell across much of Trieste on Monday, stretching from the Karst plateau down to the Adriatic coastline, in a rare winter scene that brought flurries to the waterfront while leaving nearby mountain areas largely untouched.
Local authorities reported limited disruption across the city, despite the unusual combination of snowfall and strong bora winds, a hallmark of Trieste’s winter weather. The Municipal Police said traffic and public services were operating normally, with no major incidents recorded during the morning hours.
The storm produced a striking contrast across the region. While snowflakes drifted over the sea and along the city’s historic streets, higher elevations inland remained mostly dry, underscoring the highly localized nature of the weather system affecting the northeastern corner of Italy.
The conditions coincided with the Epiphany holiday, traditionally marking the end of the Christmas season in Italy, giving residents and visitors an unexpected winter backdrop as celebrations drew to a close.
Meteorologists had forecast both snowfall and strong winds, and the bora — a cold, dry gust descending from the plateau toward the sea — contributed to rapidly changing conditions throughout the day. Further updates were expected as the system continued to move across the upper Adriatic.
