This December weekend—Saturday the 13th and Sunday the 14th—felt improbably like spring. Across the region, mild temperatures climbed to 13 degrees Celsius, softening the season’s edges and coaxing people outdoors. In Trieste, we wandered down to Trieste’s Barcola beach, where winter coats gave way to sunglasses and slow strolls along the water. Locals lingered on the promenade, chatting on benches warmed by the sun, while tourists dipped their toes into the Adriatic, phones raised to capture the unlikely light. Cafés spilled outward, bicycles traced the shoreline, and the sea lay calm—a reminder that, here, even December can feel generous.
