A large area between the historic Silos complex and the city’s Old Port has reopened to the public, providing hundreds of free parking spaces through the holiday season. The site, which is expected to serve residents and visitors until January 6, revives the parking arrangement previously used during the Barcolana sailing regatta.
The initiative is the result of coordination between Confcommercio Trieste and Coop Alleanza 3.0, the cooperative that owns both the Silos and the adjoining land. Confcommercio financed the reopening, allocating €40,000 to prepare and equip the site. The temporary lot offers roughly 450 spaces and is intended to support local businesses during one of the busiest shopping periods of the year.
Confcommercio’s president, Antonio Paoletti, said the organization would like to see the area permanently designated for parking, describing it as a potential long-term asset for the city’s commercial sector. Mayor Roberto Dipiazza expressed similar views, signaling support for establishing the lot as a stable fixture.
Coop Alleanza 3.0, however, has struck a more cautious tone. Its president, Livio Trombone, suggested that while the cooperative was willing to collaborate for the holiday season, its long-term plans for the site remain open. Should no suitable partner or proposal emerge, Coop is considering alternative uses for the property.
