Interview: FVG governor, Massimiliano Fedriga

Severe overnight storms left streets and homes flooded in the towns of Versa and Brazzano on Sunday night, forcing residents into an immediate cleanup effort and prompting a coordinated response from local and regional authorities.

Residents awoke to mud and debris covering roads and spilling into homes, with many reporting significant losses to property and personal belongings. Neighbors and volunteers were among the first to help clear streets and assist affected families.

Governor Massimiliano Fedriga visited the area Tuesday, inspecting the damage alongside Regional Civil Protection Councillor Riccardo Riccardi, Romans d’Isonzo Mayor Michele Calligaris, and Italy’s Minister for Parliamentary Relations, Luca Ciriani. Fedriga praised the rapid mobilization of residents and emergency teams, emphasizing efforts to restore access to homes as quickly as possible.

Civil protection crews and firefighters worked alongside local authorities to remove debris, secure damaged buildings, and ensure safe conditions for residents returning to their homes. Additional support from other regions is expected in the coming days to accelerate cleanup operations in both private and public spaces.

The event underscored the vulnerability of low-lying areas in Friuli Venezia Giulia to sudden heavy rainfall, while also highlighting the local community’s swift response and resilience in the face of unexpected flooding.
