Interview: FVG governor, Massimiliano Fedriga
Torrential rainfall across Friuli Venezia Giulia on Monday triggered flooding and a mudslide that engulfed three houses in Brazzano di Cormons. One person was rescued, while two remain missing.
Rescue teams, including firefighters and civil protection units, recovered one individual from the debris. Local authorities reported that the missing include an elderly woman and a younger man who was reportedly trying to assist her.
The rain caused several streams and small rivers to overflow, leading to flooding in multiple towns, including Palmanova, Manzano, Visco, Trivignano, and Bagnaria Arsa. Basements, including areas of the Palmanova hospital, were inundated, and numerous roads became impassable.
Massimiliano Fedriga, governor of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, said Monday that the situation in Cormons remained critical. “We are monitoring the situation closely. Firefighters are working to locate the missing individuals, and we hope for the best outcome,” he said. He added that the regional government would provide support to affected residents, including immediate financial assistance through the regional budget.
Officials noted that while conditions were expected to improve later in the day, emergency teams remained on high alert in the eastern part of the region, which experienced the heaviest rainfall.
The events underscore the vulnerability of certain parts of Friuli-Venezia Giulia to heavy rains, particularly towns near rivers and streams, where flooding and landslides can develop rapidly.
