The regional celebration of books and reading returns to Friuli Venezia Giulia on Friday, October 31, as the city hosts Un libro lungo un giorno (“A Book for a Day”), part of the tenth-anniversary edition of the LeggiAMO 0-18 FVG initiative. The program, promoted by the regional government in collaboration with cultural and educational associations, coincides this year with Halloween, bringing together literary events and seasonal storytelling across the city.

The full schedule is available on leggiamofvg.it. In Trieste, the day opens at 10 a.m. in the Tiziano Tessitori multimedia hall of the Regional Council, where Giuseppe Iannaccone, president of the national Center for Books and Reading (Cepell), will meet students from the Giancarlo Roli comprehensive school. The group represents young readers participating in LeggiAMO a scuola, a campaign promoting daily reading in classrooms.

At noon, the Magazzino delle Idee hosts the inauguration of LeggiAMO! Portraits of a Region Growing Through Reading, a photography exhibition by Alice Durigatto featuring teachers, librarians, students and local officials with their favorite books. Regional Vice-President and Culture Councillor Mario Anzil is expected to attend.

Throughout the day, schools, libraries and cultural centers will open their doors to families and young readers. Activities begin as early as 7:30 a.m., with shared reading at the Il Nuovo Guscio nursery. Elementary and middle schools across the city will hold read-alouds of works ranging from Roald Dahl to Italo Calvino and Daniel Pennac. At the Foschiatti Primary School, students will read stories, poems and biographies centered on peace; at the Duca D’Aosta preschool, a book chosen by teachers will “travel” from classrooms to parents gathered in the garden, encouraging reading beyond school walls.

Community events include Leggiamo al Villaggio per Crescere in San Giacomo from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., welcoming children and families for shared reading (reservations required). The Municipal Library Stelio Mattioni will host Halloween-themed picture-book readings and workshops in the afternoon, with sessions for children both under five and over six.

The Mini Mu Children’s Museum will offer quiet reading sessions for families with small children from 4:30 to 6 p.m., followed by an open invitation: from 6:30 p.m. until 11:30 p.m., anyone may stop in to read aloud — for a few minutes or an hour — as part of a community celebration of storytelling. Organizers describe the museum as “a Trieste home for reading,” welcoming visitors of all ages to share a book on one of the city’s most spirited nights of the year.
