The city of Trieste marked the 71st anniversary of its return to Italy with a ceremony honoring the Italian Navy’s new flagship, Trieste, during which the ship received its combat flag.

The ceremony took place Sunday morning on the city’s waterfront, where Mayor Roberto Dipiazza formally presented the flag to Captain Francesco Marzi, commander of the Navy’s new multi-role amphibious assault ship.

Laura Mattarella, daughter of Italian President Sergio Mattarella and godmother of the ship, attended the ceremony alongside senior government officials. Defense Minister Guido Crosetto, Justice Minister Carlo Nordio, and Minister for Parliamentary Relations Luca Ciriani were among those present.

The event symbolized both national pride and the continuation of Italy’s maritime tradition. Regional Governor Massimiliano Fedriga highlighted the ship’s origins, noting that Trieste was built by the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri. He described the company as “one of Italy’s champions of innovation,” capable of competing at the international level.

The ceremony, blending civic pride with naval heritage, underscored Trieste’s enduring role as a symbol of Italy’s maritime identity and industrial excellence.
