Italy’s right-wing coalition government, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, reached a new milestone on Sunday, becoming the third longest-serving administration in the country’s 79-year history.

The coalition has been in office for 1,094 days since Meloni assumed the premiership at Palazzo Chigi on Oct. 22, 2022, surpassing the tenure of the first Bettino Craxi government, which lasted 1,093 days from Aug. 4, 1983, to Aug. 1, 1986.

Meloni, leader of the Fratelli d’Italia party, governs alongside her coalition partners: Deputy Prime Ministers Matteo Salvini of the right-wing Lega party and Antonio Tajani of the center-right Forza Italia.

As the government approaches its three-year mark, Meloni has emphasized the coalition’s stability, noting that Italy has experienced 68 different governments since the founding of the republic in 1946.

Italy’s longest-serving postwar government was led by former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, whose second administration lasted 1,412 days, from June 11, 2001, to April 23, 2005. Berlusconi’s fourth government ranks second, with a tenure of 1,287 days from May 8, 2008, to Nov. 16, 2011.
