A large-scale evacuation is underway this morning in Trieste’s port area after the discovery of an unexploded World War II bomb during railway construction. Army bomb experts and Navy divers are working to defuse a 500-pound American-made bomb found near the Porto train station. Residents within a 468-meter radius have been ordered to evacuate by 7:45 a.m., with temporary shelter provided at the Bruno Bianchi swimming pool. Streets around Porto Nuovo are closed as authorities coordinate safety operations expected to last several hours before residents can safely return home.
