Roughly 1,500 people marched through Trieste on Thursday evening to protest Israel’s interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla, a convoy of 47 boats that organizers said was carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza.
The demonstration began as a rally in Piazza della Borsa before turning into an unauthorized march. Protesters called for the release of more than 400 people detained at sea and carried Palestinian flags and banners calling for peace.
The march ended at Trieste’s central train station, where some participants attempted to break inside before being blocked by riot police.
The protest came a day after the interception and on the eve of a nationwide general strike, with further demonstrations planned across Italy.
