The City of Trieste has completed a major renovation of the gymnasium at the Elio De Morpurgo Primary School in the Campi Elisi district, following structural issues that had forced repairs in recent years.

Municipal officials announced the conclusion of the project this week. The €130,000 intervention, carried out under the city’s 2024 program for school gym refurbishments, addressed persistent damage to the wooden flooring caused by water infiltration.

After a partial replacement of the parquet in 2024, further deterioration was discovered. A closer inspection revealed that leaks from a downspout along the perimeter wall had compromised both the surface flooring and its supporting structure. The renovation required demolition of the damaged floor, installation of new flooring and substructure, and the replacement or repair of corroded downspouts. The project also included restoring the waterproof membrane on the roof to prevent further leaks.

The works were presented by city officials including Diego Fabris, head of the school construction office, Giulio Bernetti, director of public works, and Fabio Cipriani, director of sports facility management. Representatives of the contractor, Cerbone Giovanni e Figlio Srl, and local community organizations also attended.

Elisa Lodi, Trieste’s municipal councillor for real estate policies and sports, emphasized the gym’s dual role as a facility for both education and community use. It serves the 1,177 students of the Campi Elisi comprehensive institute during school hours and is open in the afternoons and evenings for local sports associations, including the Centro Gioco Sport Antonio Coselli.

“This is a fundamental facility for both school and local sports,” Lodi said, noting that the gym is already approved for regional volleyball competitions and is expected to gain approval for basketball as well. The space also meets accessibility requirements, making it suitable for athletes with disabilities and spectators alike.

The city plans to continue its program of gym upgrades in the coming months. Lodi said officials are currently reviewing costs for a new project at the Addobbati gym, while work is nearing completion at the San Giovanni gym, which is expected to reopen by late October. The San Giovanni facility will accommodate basketball, volleyball, and futsal, with seating for up to 99 spectators and full accessibility.
