interview: FVG councilor for environment, Fabio Soccimarro
Around 80 volunteers took to the waters and piers of the Sacchetta on Saturday morning for the second edition of Puliamo a fondo, an environmental cleanup aimed at removing debris from the city’s small harbor.
The initiative, organized by the Società Triestina Sport del Mare and the Sacheta association in collaboration with the Murena Diving Sporting Club, focused on the area surrounding the groups’ piers. Participants hauled in an estimated two cubic meters of waste, including large tires, plastics, glass and cans.
Following a safety briefing and remarks from Fabio Scoccimarro, the regional councillor for the environment, divers entered the water in three designated zones, collecting smaller refuse in nets and securing bulkier items for retrieval.
Not all objects were removed. Volunteers intentionally left behind debris that had become part of the marine ecosystem, such as items now serving as shelter for sea life.
The cleanup reflects a growing effort in Trieste to balance environmental stewardship with the realities of urban waterfronts long shaped by human activity.
