Extreme weather events have long been part of history, but in recent years they have become more frequent, including in northeastern Italy, regional officials said on Friday at the presentation of a new climate report.

Fabio Scoccimarro, regional councilor for environmental protection, introduced the third edition of Segnali dal clima in Fvg: edizione 2025 (“Climate Signals in FVG: 2025 Edition”), a scientific but accessible publication prepared by the technical-scientific group Clima FVG, established by the Region in 2022 and coordinated by Arpa FVG, the regional environmental protection agency.

“Extreme climatic events have always occurred, but today, even in our region, they manifest with greater frequency,” Mr. Scoccimarro said. “In response, the administration is implementing measures for prevention, mitigation and information. This publication, recognized internationally, helps describe the state of the environment and climate in Friuli Venezia Giulia in a scientific but clear language.”

The volume brings together more than 40 contributions from researchers and experts at Arpa FVG, the Universities of Udine and Trieste, the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), the National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics (OGS), and the National Research Council (CNR), including its Institutes of Marine and Polar Sciences.

Mr. Scoccimarro described the report as a technical support tool for political decision-making, while emphasizing that it does not replace the responsibility of elected officials. He also underscored the region’s geographic role at the crossroads of the Mediterranean and the Alps, calling Friuli Venezia Giulia both a “fragile reality” and a “laboratory of best practices for Europe.”

The 2025 edition of Segnali dal clima has received the European Meteorological Society’s Outreach & Communication Award, recognizing its effectiveness in public engagement and climate communication. The award will be formally presented on September 10 in Ljubljana, during the Society’s annual conference.

This year’s edition expands its scope with three new areas of analysis: green spaces in their multiple forms, wildlife, and human health. The latter is central to the section Noi e il clima (“We and the Climate”), which features studies on environmental psychology, sustainable nutrition, and projected energy consumption for domestic climate control. Fresh attention is also given to inland waters, with a focus on river ecosystems.

The publication will be available beginning September 6 for free reading and download at:
