On Saturday, September 6, the seaside town of Muggia will once again turn its central square into an open-air sports arena. The event, Invito allo Sport (“Invitation to Sport”), invites children between the ages of 4 and 13 to try their hand at a variety of athletic disciplines, from basketball to judo, under the guidance of local clubs and instructors.

The initiative, organized by the Municipality of Muggia in collaboration with Sport & Salute, will take place in Piazza Marconi from 2:30 to 7:30 p.m. Participation is free, with on-site registration available 30 minutes before the start.
“This event allows young people to explore sports in a playful way and discover new passions,” said municipal officials Alessandra Orlando and Gianna Birnberg, who helped coordinate the program and bring in new features for this year’s edition.
Athletic associations from across the area will be on hand with equipment and demonstrations, including Evinrude Muggia for track and field, Interclub Muggia for basketball, Carso Muggia for gymnastics, Polisportiva Muggia 90 for dance, and Tennis Club Borgolauro. Other sports represented will include soccer, rowing, boxing, karate, judo, sailing, and scuba diving.
A new addition to the program links the sports fair to one of the region’s most prominent events: the Barcolana regatta in Trieste, now in its 57th year. Under the initiative Muggia Colora la Barcolana (“Muggia Colors the Barcolana”), children will be invited to decorate small pennants made from repurposed sailcloth donated by Olimpic Sails. Local shops have provided the paints. Each child can add their name to a pennant, which will later be distributed to boat owners in Muggia’s harbor on October 4, when the colorful banners will be hoisted on the masts.
To encourage participation, every child will receive a card to track the sports they try during the afternoon. Those who complete all activities and take part in the pennant decoration will be rewarded with a complimentary ice cream, courtesy of Gelateria Jimmy.
No advance booking is required. Families can simply arrive at Piazza Marconi, where a registration booth will be set up in front of the Town Hall. Comfortable clothing and sneakers are recommended.
