For those curious about what it feels like to breathe underwater, a local diving club is offering an opportunity this weekend to try it out in a safe and controlled setting.

The Circolo Sommozzatori di Trieste, an amateur sports association affiliated with the Italian National Olympic Committee and the Italian Federation of Sport Fishing and Underwater Activities, will host its annual “Prova Bolle” (“Try Bubbles”) event on Sunday at the Ausonia bathing establishment. Visitors will be able to participate at half the usual entrance fee.

Now in its second year, the program is designed to introduce participants to the basics of underwater safety and technique, whether with scuba tanks, fins and masks, or simple breath-hold diving. “The goal is to show anyone who is interested how to approach the underwater world correctly, avoiding mistakes and gaining a minimum of technical knowledge,” said Enrico Torlo, a federal instructor, founder and former president of the Circolo. The group is now led by Paola Nichetto, a longtime member and former vice president.

About a dozen instructors will be on hand to guide participants, who must be at least 8 years old. The club already runs “mini-sub” courses for children ages 8 to 13, which Torlo says are crucial for building good habits early. The group also collaborates with Ausonia’s management to keep the seabed around the establishment clean.

Founded in 1986, the Circolo Sommozzatori promotes a culture of the sea through training, competitive and recreational diving, and community activities. It has also organized dives for people with disabilities in cooperation with schools, other regional diving clubs, and public institutions.
