Sunday marked the hottest day of the summer in Friuli Venezia Giulia, with Trieste registering its highest temperature since records began at the Molo Fratelli Bandiera station in the 1990s. The thermometer there climbed to 37.2 degrees Celsius (99 degrees Fahrenheit), surpassing by nearly one degree the previous high of 36.4 set in 2014, according to the regional environmental agency, Arpa FVG.

The heat wave is expected to persist in the coming days. Temperatures will drop slightly on Monday — remaining above 30 degrees — before intensifying again by midweek, when highs are projected to exceed 35 degrees. Moderate bora winds are forecast to blow across the coast and plains on Monday, especially in Trieste, where morning gusts may be stronger.

The weekend’s scorching temperatures followed an unusually cool July, the coldest in three decades, itself preceded by the third-warmest June on record, after 2019 and 2003.

The heat affected the entire region, from the Adriatic coast to the plains and the Alpine foothills, with the freezing level reaching 4,800 meters (15,748 feet). Monfalcone reported the highest reading in Friuli Venezia Giulia at 39 degrees. Several towns in the plains topped 38 degrees, including Lauzacco at 38.6, Cervignano at 38.3 and Codroipo at 38.2. Udine recorded 37.5, Pordenone 36.9 and Gorizia 36.7. Coastal resorts saw slightly cooler temperatures, with Lignano Sabbiadoro at 34.5 and Grado at 33.2.

Even high-altitude locations saw unusual warmth. Tarvisio and Forni di Sotto exceeded 30 degrees, and Tolmezzo reached 36.2.

ARPA warned the heat remains “very dry” due to a strong anticyclone over central Europe that is drawing in northeasterly winds. Throughout the week, light borino and bora breezes are expected, keeping humidity low while doing little to reduce the intense heat.
