The city of Trieste has opened applications for its Nonni Vigili program, a longstanding civic initiative that places senior volunteers at elementary school crossings to ensure student safety. Interested residents can apply between July 21 and August 19 for the 2025–2026 school year.

The program is open to individuals over the age of 50 who have lived in Trieste for at least five years. It is managed by the municipality and aims to provide both a practical service to the community and a way for older citizens to stay active in public life.

“This is an important role,” said Caterina de Gavardo, the city’s Councillor for Urban Security Policies, in a statement announcing the launch. “Last year we had around fifty volunteers. I hope to see even more this year. These individuals are a reassuring presence for both children and parents, carrying out their duties with patience, sensitivity and attention.”

The Nonni Vigili, or “vigilant grandparents,” are stationed outside schools during arrival and dismissal times. The program has been widely appreciated in the city for its low-cost contribution to school safety and community engagement.

Further details about the application process and requirements, including eligibility based on economic status, are available through the municipality’s official website.
