Visitors to Trieste have until August 17 to experience Archeoplastica, an unusual exhibition on display at the Immaginario Scientifico and the BioMa environmental education center. The show presents a striking collection of plastic objects that have been recovered from the sea—everyday items transformed into relics that bear witness to humanity’s long-lasting environmental footprint.

From 1970s detergent bottles to ice cream cups, marbles, and obsolete phone cards, the items on display offer a haunting glimpse into the past. Described by organizers as “contemporary fossils,” these objects reflect both the endurance of plastic in marine ecosystems and the cultural habits of past decades—habits whose environmental costs continue to be felt.

The exhibition is made possible through a partnership with AcegasApsAmga, a regional utilities provider. Alongside the main exhibit, a series of events and workshops aims to further engage the public on issues of sustainability and plastic pollution.

With its blend of science, memory, and environmental awareness, Archeoplastica invites reflection on how our everyday choices shape the planet—and how long those choices endure.
