The University of Trieste is restoring two historic early 20th-century buildings, F1 and F2, within San Giovanni Park. Formerly part of the Provincial Psychiatric Hospital, these structures are being repurposed for university research, teaching, and community use while preserving their architectural heritage.
Construction began in 2022 after contract award in 2021, with delays due to structural issues and asbestos remediation. Building F1, about 2,100 square meters, will house research labs and study spaces. Building F2, nearly 2,000 square meters, is being converted into classrooms and community areas, including a new main lecture hall.
The project’s total cost exceeds €10 million, with regional funding covering roughly €7 million. Completion is expected by spring 2026. This restoration forms part of a broader effort to transform San Giovanni Park into a cultural and scientific hub linking the university and the city.
