This June, the city of Trieste will host a series of cultural events blending natural phenomena and literary heritage as part of its annual Trieste Estate summer program.

From June 13 to 15, the Boramata Festival will animate Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia and Piazzale Monte Re in Opicina with dozens of colorful pinwheels designed to capture and display the city’s famous bora wind. Visitors can also experience the BoraBox, an interactive installation that simulates the wind’s gusts for photographs and features archival footage from the regional broadcaster RAI FVG.

The festival opens with a ceremony involving local preschool children and includes activities such as a morning yoga session and kite flying demonstrations by European acrobatics runner-up Sara Rizzetto. On the final day, visitors can purchase pinwheels with proceeds supporting the Monticolo&Foti Foundation.

Concurrently, the city will host the 16th edition of the Bloomsday Festival, celebrating James Joyce’s Ulysses and his enduring connection to Trieste. From June 14 through 16, performances at the garden of the Museo Sartorio will focus on the novel’s “Eumaeus” chapter, featuring theatrical productions that explore themes of youth, rebellion, and homecoming.

Highlights include a metatheatrical play directed by Gioia Battista, an English-language one-act drama portraying Joyce’s relationship with his muse Nora Barnacle, and a musical-theatrical piece combining poetry, dance, and live accordion.

Organized by the Comune di Trieste with support from the University of Trieste and regional cultural bodies, these events underscore the city’s rich blend of natural beauty and literary tradition, inviting both residents and visitors to engage with its unique cultural landscape.
