This month, travelers in Italy can trade high-speed trains for the rhythmic clatter of steel wheels on old tracks. As part of a cultural revival initiative linked to GO! 2025, the cross-border European Capital of Culture celebration between Gorizia and Nova Gorica, twelve historic train journeys will crisscross Friuli Venezia Giulia throughout June — and the experience is more than just scenic.
From World Heritage cities to war memorials, freestyle sports festivals to medieval reenactments, each journey is curated to showcase a different face of the region. Passengers ride aboard the iconic Centoporte carriages — vintage rolling stock from the 1930s — outfitted with modern comforts but steeped in Old World charm.
Backed by FS Treni Turistici Italiani and the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, with operational support from PromoTurismoFVG, the project blends sustainable mobility with immersive local discovery. Tickets come with free guided tours, nature walks, and access to exclusive events — and yes, bicycles are welcome onboard.
