The city of Trieste will host its first international underwater photography competition, Sguardi dal Mare, from April 11 to 13, 2025. Organized by the amateur sports association Mare Nordest in collaboration with the Municipality of Trieste, the event will bring together professional and amateur photographers to document the marine biodiversity of the Gulf of Trieste.

The competition, held in the waters off the Barcola waterfront, is recognized by the Italian Federation of Sport Fishing and Underwater Activities (FIPSAS) and ASI, marking a rare collaboration between the two organizations. Participants will compete in three categories—reflex and mirrorless cameras, compact cameras, and smartphones—capturing images of marine life and underwater environments.

The contest aims to highlight the region’s rich underwater landscape while promoting marine conservation. A panel of international judges, led by photographer and diving instructor Emanuele Vitale, will evaluate submissions. Winning photographs will be displayed at the Mare Nordest 2025 exhibition in Piazza UnitĂ  d’Italia from May 23 to 25.

The event will also include an educational program for children focused on marine conservation. Institutional support comes from the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, with additional backing from environmental organizations and technical sponsors.
